Storm Kirogi downgraded to tropical depression before making landfall in Vietnam

Sunday, November 19, 2017, 10:11 GMT+7

Typhoon Kirogi, the 14th to hit Vietnam this year, has weakened to a tropical depression after reaching the sea area off the country’s south-central region.

The tropical storm entered a maritime area about 200 kilometers east of Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, and Binh Thuan Provinces on Sunday morning before diminishing, the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting reported.

Average wind speed was recorded at between 40 and 60km per hour and gusts at the maximum of 88km an hour.

The tropical depression is forecast to travel westward at 20km per hour in the next 24 hours.

By 4:00 pm on Sunday, it will have reached the mainland of south-central Vietnam.

In the next 24 to 48 hours, the tropical depression is expected to continue traveling west before weakening to a low-pressure zone in southern Cambodia.

Under the effect of the climatic event, strong winds and rough seas will lash the coast from the south-central province of Binh Dinh to the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

Extreme winds will blow in the mainland of Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, and Binh Thuan Provinces.

Localities from the central province of Quang Nam to Binh Thuan Province, as well as in the Central Highlands, will be hit by downpours.

The north-central region may also be impacted by the rains due to the combined effects of the tropical depression and an enhanced cold front.

From November 19 to 24, water levels in rivers in central provinces and the Central Highlands will rise, resulting in potential flooding.
