Several businesses in the northern Vietnamese province of Hung Yen have been discovered releasing untreated wastewater directly into the local environment.

The environmental police unit under the Ministry of Public Security caught one facility red-handed while it illegally discharged liquid waste in Bach Sam Commune, My Hao District on Thursday morning.

An inspection revealed that the facility was without a proper waste treatment system and had been releasing wastewater directly into the Bac Hung Hai reservoir system in Hung Yen Province despite the presence of waste treatment tanks.

According to officers, the area belongs to Thai Ha Hung Packing Company and had been leased to several companies in need of a location to recycle plastic materials.

Le Xuan Kieu, director of Thai Ha Hung Company, stated that each lessee is responsible for all environmental issues, as per contracts signed by both parties.

Three Chinese firms had previously used the piece of land to carry out operations, Kieu stated.

The provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment later banned the businesses from operating due to multiple environmental violations.

“We stopped leasing our property to the Chinese businesses in late August before allowing domestic companies to rent the location,’ Kieu elaborated.

Following a report of the offenses, Thai Ha Hung Company terminated their rental deals with the firms, according to the director.
