Eleven students at a primary school in the northern province of Bac Ninh were hospitalized on Monday after they fell from the second to the first floor after a balcony railing gave way.
All eleven victims were taken to the Viet Duc University Hospital in Hanoi for emergency treatment after receiving first-aid at a local clinic, doctors confirmed with Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Monday night.
According to a parent of one of the victims’ classmates, all of the injured students are fifth-graders at the Van Mon Primary School in Bac Ninh’s Yen Phong District.
The children were lining up outside of their classroom on the second floor of their building after their afternoon break, when a section of the balcony railings suddenly gave way, throwing those leaning against it to the first floor below.
Of the 11 hospitalized students, three were said to be seriously injured, including one who suffered a broken pelvis, a torn shoulder blade and a badly fractured skull.
The other two had also suffered fractured skulls and cerebral hematoma’s, though of a less serious nature.
The eight other students suffered minor injuries only and were treated at the Bac Ninh General Hospital.
A representative from Yen Phong Police told Tuoi Tre on Monday that the balcony railings at Van Mon Primary School were in poor condition, though further examination would be required to definitively determine the cause of the accident.
