-- The 12th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam begins its seventh plenary meeting on Monday, during which three important policies will be discussed.

Society

-- A footbridge, believed to be the most beautiful of its kind in Ho Chi Minh City, was inaugurated on Sunday, connecting two parts of the Gia Dinh Park that are separated by Hoang Minh Giam Street in Go Vap District.

-- A man was caught transporting 7,400 methamphetamine pills from Laos into Vietnam by the border guard unit of the central Vietnamese province of Quang Tri, officers said on Sunday.

-- Hoang Trung Hai, secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee, led an inspection group to examine the progress of the Nhon-Hanoi Railway Station project, a 12.5km urban rail that costs 1.176 billion euro (US$1.4 billion) to build, on Sunday.

-- A Phuong Trang passenger bus was heading to the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang on the Ho Chi Minh City – Trung Luong Expressway at around 8:10 pm on Sunday, when it suddenly caught fire, with the driver able to stop the vehicle and evacuate all the passengers just in time.

-- Vietnam’s military-run Viettel Group reported revenue of VND38 trillion ($1.7 billion) from its overseas investment in 2017, a 38 percent surge from a year earlier.

-- Vietnam’s Agribank has angered customers by increasing the cash withdrawal fee for transactions made on its own ATMs from VND1,000 to VND1,500, excluding value-added tax.

Education

-- Nearly 190 contestants from 25 countries and territories started competing at the 19th Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO), a premier physics competition held annually for pre-university students aged below 20 from Asian countries, hosted by Hanoi’s University of Science and Technology on Sunday.

-- The Vietnamese government agrees in principle that an educational-scientific urban center, with the International Center of Interdisciplinary Science Education (ICISE) being its core, will be developed in the south-central province of Binh Dinh, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said on Sunday.

Sports

-- The fifth Hung Kings Cup championship, with 20 teams representing overseas Vietnamese students, entrepreneurs and intellectuals in Singapore, kicked off in the city-state on Sunday.

-- Vietnam beat Malaysia 3-1 in their last Group B game at the 2018 AFC Women's Futsal Championship in Thailand on Sunday, setting up a semifinal with Indonesia this Wednesday.
