An 11-year-old boy in the north-central province of Nghe An has been rushed to the hospital with a severe brain damage as he suffered alcohol poisoning after a ‘drinking challenge’ with his friends, doctors said on Friday.
As of Friday afternoon, Va Ba Nenh, who lost his consciousness and showed sign of brain damage when he was admitted to a children’s hospital in Nghe An, remained in coma after more than a week in intensive care, according to doctors.
The boy, of the Hmong ethnic minority group, threw a drinking party with some friends at his house, when his family members were away, according to the family.
The friends then challenged Nenh to drink as much as he could, and the 11-year-old eventually downed more than one liter of alcohol.
He soon lost his consciousness, developed difficulty breathing, started to vomit and entered a coma after prolonged fever.
The boy was first taken to a local hospital before being transferred to the province-level clinic for better treatment.
After more than a week of treatment, the patient remained in a deep coma, suffering from serious neural damage, respiratory failure, and metabolic disorders.
Born into a poor family, Nenh lost his father at an early age, while his mother also left. He is being cared for by his older brother.
