A man reportedly high on crystal meth has stabbed to death a police officer before committing suicide in the south-central Vietnamese province of Binh Thuan.
The suspect, 24-year-old Do Thanh Trung, showed signs of being high on drugs as he was wielding a knife and trying to stop vehicles along a section of National Highway 1 in Tien Loi Commune, Phan Thiet City on Tuesday morning.
Lieutenant Colonel Tran Van Dung, 54, who is chief of the police unit in Tien Loi Commune, and another officer later arrived to deal with the incident.
As their attempt to persuade Trung to drop his weapon did not work, the officers had to use force.
Trung stabbed Lt. Col. Dung during the struggle and ran away.
The police chief was promptly brought to the nearest hospital but he was already dead on arrival.
The other officer joined hands with local residents to chase down the suspect and were able to corner him.
Trung then stabbed himself with the same knife.
He was then admitted to the hospital for emergency treatment but the man also died later the same day.
According to online newspaper VnExpress, Lt. Col. Dung was chief of police in the commune for three years.
He worked as a detention officer at the Phan Thiet Department of Police before assuming the top position.
