Many streets in Hanoi suffered from severe congestion on Friday, the last working day of 2018 for most salaried people, as residents rushed to head back to their hometown for the New Year holiday that lasts until Tuesday.

Kilometers of vehicles inched forward on key streets including Nguyen Trai, Tay Son, Xa Dan, Giai Phong, and Tran Duy Hung.

The congestion lasted well into the evening, made even worse by a heavy rain.

Public workers in Vietnam enjoy a four-day New Year holiday this year, lasting from Saturday until Tuesday.

They will go to work on Saturday next week, on January 5, 2019, to make up for a day off on Monday.
