-- Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on Saturday endorsed the construction of a US$4.3-billion thermal power plant using liquefied natural gas in Bac Lieu Province, located in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region, as a way to improve its economy.

-- The administration in the north-central province of Quang Binh on Saturday officially banned its officials from giving gifts to local government leaders around and during the Lunar New Year, which is the country’s largest public holiday and is two weeks away.

-- A man was arrested on Saturday in coastal Kien Giang Province in southwestern Vietnam on murder charges after he was suspected of killing a woman, taking her possessions, hiding her body in a forest and boarding a boat as a fisherman.

-- Two market surveillance officials in the north-central province of Nghe An are being detained allegedly for receiving a VND6 million (US$258) bribe from a physician to spare him from a VND60-70 million ($2,580-3,010) fine, local police said on Saturday.  

-- Police in the north-central province of Thanh Hoa busted an online soccer betting ring with over VND300 billion ($13 million) placed in the gambling.

-- Police in the northern border province of Lang Son arrested a Chinese man and several of his compatriots for illegally transporting over two tonnes of firecrackers to Vietnam on Saturday – the largest amount of the contraband ever seized locally so far.

-- The deputy head of a prosecution agency in a mountainous area in Thanh Hoa Province was found hanged in his office on Saturday.

Business

-- A shopping mall named Sense City was opened on Pham Van Dong Boulevard in Thu Duc District, Ho Chi Minh City, on Saturday at the time when consumer need is growing in the lead-up to the country’s Lunar New Year holiday.

-- Passengers on flights operated by flag carrier Vietnam Airlines to Van Don International Airport in the northern coastal province of Quang Ninh will be given a gratis entrance ticket to the famous Ha Long Bay from Sunday through December 31, 2021. The tickets are valid within 30 days.

-- The Vietnamese government has founded Vietnam Stock Exchange with an authorized capital of VND3 trillion ($129 million) after combining the two stock exchanges in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

-- Ho Chi Minh City reported 36 million boat rides by tourists in 2018, with the foreign ridership reaching 40,000, up six percent year on year.
