-- Nguyen Thi Le, deputy secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, was elected Monday as the new chairwoman of the decision-making People’s Council for the remaining period of the 2016-21 tenure, replacing Nguyen Thi Quyet Tam, who retired earlier this year.

-- A ninth-grade student has been praised and awarded VND3 million (US$129) for saving three seventh graders from drowning in a local river in the north-central Vietnamese province of Thanh Hoa on Sunday.

-- Two people on a motorcycle were killed after their vehicle crashed into a trailer truck at the An Suong Intersection in Hoc Mon District, Ho Chi Minh City on Monday evening.

-- Confrontation continued to break out between employees of two companies in the northern province of Quang Ninh on Monday due to their conflict over the construction of a road leading to a local coal mine.

-- Police officers in District 5, Ho Chi Minh City have arrested a 30-year-old man who is suspected of attacking ten people between March 23 and early April with a sharp object, after which the victims had to receive treatment for HIV exposure.

-- A man and his son were brutally assaulted in the northern province of Nam Dinh on Sunday by a group of five people who used their pay toilet and insisted on paying only VND5,000 ($0.2), while the listed service price was VND2,000 ($0.08) per person.

-- The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Taxation is coordinating with the police sector to investigate a case where a local company abandoned its headquarters to evade taxes after receiving an income worth $11.2 million.

-- The African swine fever epidemic has been put under control in Vietnam, with no new outbreaks discovered in the past 30 days, the Department of Animal Health under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said on Monday.

-- Police in the northern province of Ha Giang on Monday initiated legal proceedings against three individuals, including two deputy directors of the provincial Department of Education and Training, for allegedly abetting the test-score manipulation in the 2018 National High School Examination, sending the total number of people probed in the case to five.

-- A female kindergarten teacher in the northern province of Thai Nguyen has been accused of putting a dirty substance on the genitals of a five-year-old girl, which caused her to suffer vaginitis.
