Society

-- Vietnam's aviation authorities imposed a 12-month ban on Saturday on a policewoman for making a fuss and insulting airline employees at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City over luggage issues on August 11. The police department in Hanoi, where she is working, had suspended her from work for 30 days for an investigation into the same issues.

-- A magnitude-2.8 tremor shook houses in the northern province of Dien Bien on Saturday. Earthquakes often hit the region but they have caused little damage.

-- Several localities along the central coastline in Vietnam are facing water shortages because of drought, including Da Nang, Quang Ngai, Quang Nam, Binh Dinh, and Phu Yen.

-- A 25-year-old man, Nguyen Van Binh, has been fined VND7.5 million (US$329) for offending police officers on social media, a police spokesperson said on Friday. He was pulled over by the police force in the north-central province of Thanh Hoa on August 15 for failure to wear a crash helmet while driving a motorbike. Binh then took pictures of police officers handling him and uploaded them on Facebook along with offensive captions directed at the officers.

Business

-- A private Vietnamese company, Thien Minh, is seeking government permission to establish an airline in Quang Nam Province, located in central Vietnam. The proposed Kite Air plans to operate 30 aircraft by 2024.

Lifestyle

-- A traditional boat race was organized along Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe Canal in Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday in a bid to raise locals' awareness of cleaning and protecting the waterway.

-- Da Nang is among the top three destinations of South Korean tourists during the September 12-15 period, which coincides with the Mid-Autumn Festival, according to Skyscanner, a travel fare aggregator website and travel metasearch engine based in Edinburgh, Scotland.
