-- Authorities at Da Nang International Airport in the namesake central Vietnamese city isolated a Chinese passenger from Hunan Province for health screening on Saturday afternoon for having a high temperature of 38.5 degrees Celsius upon arrival, a source confirmed with Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper evening the same day.

-- Over 170 people were booked for stockpiling and setting off firecrackers illegally in the north-central province of Ha Tinh on Saturday, the first day of the new lunar year, 25 years since the nationwide ban on the explosives took effect in 1995.

-- Twenty-two people were killed and 13 others injured in 21 traffic accidents in Vietnam on Saturday, according to the Department of Traffic Police.

-- Many plans for Tet, or Lunar New Year, were ruined for residents in Hanoi on Saturday as an unusually big rain soaked the Vietnamese capital for most of the day.

-- A police captain who was stabbed to death by two men while he was on duty in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on Friday afternoon has been posthumously promoted to the rank of major in the police force for his sacrifice, according to a decision signed by Public Security Minister To Lam.

-- Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc visited and extended Lunar New Year's wishes to the police force and residents in the central city of Da Nang on Saturday.


-- Vietnam’s weightlifting team departed for Rome, Italy at 12:00 am on Saturday to participate in the 2020 Weighlifting World Cup which will run from January 27-31 in the Italian capital and double as a qualifying round for weightlifting at the Olympic Games in Tokyo later this year.
