— A Vietnamese returning from Russia on May 13 has become the 327th novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) patient in Vietnam, the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control announced on Tuesday afternoon.

— The Central Steering Committee for Corruption Prevention and Control on Tuesday set a target of wrapping up investigations into 13 cases, issuing indictments in 17 cases, and bringing 21 cases involving allegations of corruption to court by the end of 2020.

— Police in the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang are investigating a case of “infringement upon human bodies, graves or remains” after a group of creditors dug up the grave of a local man’s mother-in-law and incinerated her remains, for the man had failed to pay back his debt.

Business

Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Tuesday held a press conference announcing the launch of Cashless Day 2020, an annual campaign promoting non-cash payment in Vietnam, in coordination with the Communications Department under the State Bank of Vietnam, the National Payment Corporation of Vietnam (NAPAS), and the Vietnam E-commerce Association (VECOM).

— There are over 88.5 million bank accounts in Vietnam with 63.7 percent of Vietnamese adults having a bank account, according to the latest statistics from the State Bank of Vietnam.

— Eleven Vietnamese officials — including four officials from the Tax Department in the northern province of Bac Ninh, six officials from Bac Ninh’s Customs Department, and a former provincial tax department vice-director who has assumed a new position at the General Department of Taxation — have been suspended for 15 days as authorities look into an alleged bribery accusation involving the Vietnam subsidiary of Japanese plastics manufacturer Tenma.

— The number of people in Vietnam taking to the skies so far in May reached 2.88 million, a year-on-year decline of 70 percent, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has announced. The figure is nonetheless an improvement against April, when the number of passengers plunged 98 percent year-on-year.

Education

— The principal of Bach Dang Middle School in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City, where a flamboyant tree was uprooted on Tuesday morning, killing one sixth-grade student and injuring more than a dozen others, has taken responsibility for the “unwanted accident.”

Sports

— Midfielder Do Hung Dung, who captained Vietnam’s squad that won the gold medal in men’s football at the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Philippines, was named winner of the 2019 Vietnam Golden Ball, the country’s most prestigious individual football award, on Tuesday.

World news

— The novel coronavirus has sickened over 5.68 million people and killed more than 352,100 around the globe as of Wednesday morning, according to statistics. More than 2.43 million patients have recovered from COVID-19.
