Police in Hanoi on Tuesday night managed to arrest the remaining suspect, who fled after allegedly killing an 18-year-old girl by pulling her into a river to rob her in the Vietnamese capital city’s Thuong Tin District last week.

Nguyen Van Quan, 37, living in Quat Dong Commune of Thuong Tin District, was arrested while hiding in Ha Hoi Commune in the same district, said Colonel Nguyen Thanh Tung, deputy director of the Hanoi Department of Public Security.

Quan is identified as one of the two suspects who killed T.T.H., 18, living in Thuong Tin’s Nguyen Trai Commune.

H.’s mother, T., on Saturday reported that the 18-year-old girl had gone missing since the night before.

An investigation launched by police in Thuong Tin in collaboration with Hanoi’s criminal police squad led to the apprehension of Quan and Nguyen Xuan Trung, 35, in Van Phu Commune, located in the same district. Both of them are drug addicts, according to police officers.

However, Quan had escaped before police summoned him.

According to Trung’s preliminary testimony at the police station, he asked Quan to steal two formworks for house construction in Tien Phong Commune in the same district at around 6:00 pm on Friday last week.

On his way to sell the formworks for money, Trung spotted H. from afar and came up with the idea to rob the girl while she was stopping her electric bicycle to answer a phone call on the dyke road along the Nhue River in Nguyen Trai Commune.

As per his discussion with Quan, Trung walked to H. and pulled the girl into the Nhue River.

Despite H.’s pleading, Trung drowned H. in the water until she became immobile and pushed her out to the river bed.

Trung then took H.’s mobile phone and electric bicycle to sell them for VND3.3 million (US$142).

At 9:00 pm on the same day, after using drugs together, Trung shared VND700,000 ($30) to Quan.

Functional forces started searching for H.’s body on Tuesday morning.

The body was found at around 12:30 pm on the same day, five kilometers downstream from the river section where the murder had taken place.

On the same afternoon, Hanoi police filed legal proceedings against Trung for murder and robbery, as well as started searching for Quan.
