Construction workers are racing against the lock to complete an upgrade project on Nguyen Huu Canh Street, once a flood-prone street in Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City, by the end of this week.

The city’s Transport Construction Investment Project Management Board announced that the street will fully reopen to traffic at 8:00 am on Friday, according to Thanh Nien (Young People) newspaper.

Currently, the project has entered its final stages, with primary work packages, including roads, sidewalks, lighting systems, and trees, nearing full completion.

The investor is currently asphalting the road and laying bricks on the unfinished sidewalk sections, with workers toiling away across three shifts per day.

“The road will open to traffic by April 30 and all remaining works will be completed at a later date,” a representative for the investor said.

The completion of the upgrade project is expected to end the inundation on Nguyen Huu Canh Street that has plagued the thoroughfare on rainy days for the past 18 years.

It is also expected to facilitate traffic between the city center and the Saigon Bridge.

Nguyen Huu Canh Street was built in 1997 and completed in 2002.

From 2003 to the present, the street has sunk nearly an entire meter, making it one of the most flood-prone streets in the city.

Its renovation, considered a key project in the city, commenced in October 2019 with the goal of raising the road surface by 1.2 meters.

Due to the implementation of the project, many parts of Nguyen Huu Canh Street were alternatively restricted to traffic, having caused congestion for commuters over the past 17 months.
