One day after the 36th coronavirus death was confirmed in Vietnam, another patient died on Sunday, according to a Ministry of Health report.
This is the second virus-related fatality to have been recorded in the country this year.
A 34-year-old man from Bac Ninh Province, recognized as patient No. 3,055, passed away of underlying health conditions on Sunday, the health ministry confirmed on Monday morning.
The patient, N.H.H., was taken to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases last month with the diagnosis of severe pneumonia caused by COVID-19, traumatic brain injury due to a traffic accident, sepsis caused by meningitis, and ventricular dilation.
H. received treatment with mechanical ventilation through endotracheal tubes, combined antibiotics, anticoagulants, and anti-inflammatory medicines, but his condition did not improve.
The patient later developed brain edema while the sepsis and meningitis got worse. He eventually died on Sunday evening.
This is the 37th coronavirus-related death in Vietnam since the pathogen hit the country in early 2020, according to the health ministry.
On Saturday, an 89-year-old woman, recognized as coronavirus patient No. 3,839, died also of underlying health conditions. The health ministry counted her as a coronavirus-associated fatality.
The woman was the first victim in Vietnam in over eight months after the 35th death was reported on September 3, 2020.
On Monday morning, the Ministry of Health reported 37 local coronavirus cases, all of which were detected in isolated or locked-down areas, taking the country’s tally to 4,212 patients, including 2,668 recoveries and 37 deaths.
Of these new patients, 22 were detected in Bac Giang Province, 11 in Bac Ninh Province, and the remainder in Vinh Phuc Province and Tuyen Quang Province.
To date, more than 108,000 have been placed under quarantine due to COVID-19 nationwide, the ministry said.
The ministry also reported that 22,561 people in Vietnam have so far received their second COVID-19 vaccine shot.
