Vietnam confirms 12,450 new coronavirus infections, 164 deaths

Vietnam’s Ministry of Health recorded 11,811 new coronavirus cases throughout the country on Thursday, alongside 5,627 recoveries and 164 deaths.

The latest infections, including 21 imported and 12,429 local transmissions, were reported in 59 provinces and cities, the ministry said, elaborating that 6,842 patients caught the pathogen in the community.

Ho Chi Minh City documented 1,582 of the domestic cases, Can Tho City 741, Tay Ninh Province 683, Binh Duong Province 678, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province 658, Binh Thuan Province 402, Hanoi 264, Lam Dong Province 235, Khanh Hoa Province 191, Bac Ninh Province 122, Thua Thien-Hue Province 96, Quang Nam Province 92, Da Nang 66, Quang Ninh Province 19, and Hai Phong City two.

Vietnam had recorded 11,789 domestically-acquired infections on Wednesday.

The country has registered 1,163,054 community transmissions in all its 63 provinces and cities since the fourth virus wave erupted on April 27. A total of 940,071 of them have recovered from COVID-19.

Ho Chi Minh City tops the table with 462,371 patients, followed by Binh Duong Province with 278,780, Dong Nai Province with 84,508, Long An Province with 37,681, Tien Giang Province with 24,239, Tay Ninh Province with 22,159, An Giang Province with 21,565, Dong Thap Province with 19,017, Binh Thuan Province with 13,991, Can Tho City with 13,015, Khanh Hoa Province with 12,009, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province with 11,688, Hanoi with 8,844, and Da Nang with 5,658.

Vietnam logged a mere 1,570 locally-transmitted infections in total in the previous three waves.

The health ministry confirmed 5,627 recovered patients on Thursday, elevating the total to 942,888.

The toll has jumped to 24,407 fatalities after the ministry documented 164 deaths on the same day, including 59 in Ho Chi Minh City, 17 in An Giang Province, 13 in Tien Giang Province, 13 in Binh Duong Province, and the remaining in 15 other provinces and cities.  

Vietnam has detected 1,168,228 infections since the COVID-19 pandemic first hit it early last year.

Health workers have given over 114.5 million vaccine doses, including 1,578,870 jabs on Wednesday, since vaccination was rolled out nationwide on March 8.

Nearly 68.5 million of the country’s 98 million people have got at least one dose while more than 46 million are now fully inoculated.

Health authorities target to fully inoculate 80 percent of the adults and 100 percent of those aged 12 to under 18 by the end of this year, according to a draft government plan for COVID-19 response in 2021-23.
