The German government has donated 75 ventilators and other medical equipment to Vietnam as its aid for the Southeast Asian country to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

German Ambassador to Vietnam Guido Hildner presented the ventilators, along with 15 monitors and 20,000 pulse oximeters, to the Hanoi Medical University Hospital on Wednesday, according to a press release issued by the Embassy of Germany in the Vietnamese capital on the same day.

These donations, which were delivered to Noi Bai International Airport on November 13, are valued at about €825,000 (US$927,000) in total.

This aid was made in response to Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh asking German Chancellor Angela Merkel in August to offer COVID-19 vaccines and medical equipment to Vietnam, the embassy said in the press release.

It is a reaffirmation of the deepened cooperation between Germany and Vietnam on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the two countries’ strategic partnership establishment.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Ambassador Hildner said he was very pleased about the delivery of such medical equipment for Vietnam to deal with the pandemic.

The equipment is essential to support the intensive medical treatment for critical COVID-19 patients and contribute to their recovery, the ambassador said, adding that Germany stands with Vietnam in overcoming the pandemic.

“We can only overcome the pandemic together," Ambassador Hildner was quoted as saying.

"Germany will continue to support Vietnam to the best of its ability in the fight against the pandemic.”

Two months ago, Germany gifted Vietnam two batches of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine totaling 3.45 million doses to assist in the country’s vaccination campaign that has been deployed since March.

In summer this year, a number of German states gave Vietnam a total of one million antigen rapid test kits as well as face masks, protective clothing, and freezers for vaccine storage.

In early 2020, the Vietnamese government supplied Germany with more than 100,000 face masks.

The Southeast Asian country has documented 1,168,228 coronavirus cases, including 942,888 recoveries and 24,407 deaths, since the pandemic hit it in early 2020, the Vietnamese Ministry of Health reported.

The nation has recently seen its COVID-19 death toll remarkably drop, to 164 on Thursday from 335 three months earlier, despite its daily infections gradually increasing from mid-October.
