Residents in Hanoi struggled with cold weather on Saturday as an extremely strong cold front caused temperatures to plummet to nine degrees Celsius, against the norm of at least 30 degress in tropical Vietnam.

The cold spell has affected northern Vietnam over the past few days and lowered the temperature to around eight to 11 degrees Celsius in the Red River Delta and three to six degrees Celsius in mountainous areas on Saturday.

The weather condition also results in chances of sleet and frost on high mountains.

It is as hot as at least 30 degrees in tropical Vietnam.

In Hanoi, the average lows were recorded at nine to 10 degrees Celsius, and the chilly weather was accompanied by light rain and strong wind.

Many laborers, including 55-year-old motor cart driver, decided to build bonfires along the sidewalks to keep themselves warm, as their jobs require them to be outdoors most of the time.

“The cold is intensified by the rainy and windy weather, which makes it unbearable for me,” Manh stated.

Nguyen Quoc Trung, 55, a security guard at a local seafood store, said it was much colder on Saturday compared to Friday.

“I had to put on many layers of shirts to stay warm,” Trung added.

The National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting stated that this is the strongest cold spell to have hit northern Vietnam since the beginning of this year.

Localities in the region were forecast to experience low temperatures from February 19 to 22.

Showers are also in the forecast from February 19 to 21.
