Thirty-eight people were killed and 53 others injured in traffic accidents across Vietnam from Saturday to Monday, the first three days of the ongoing four-day break marking Reunification Day (April 30) and International Workers’ Day (May 1).
The National Committee for Traffic Safety recorded 80 crashes, along with 38 deaths and 53 injured victims in the country during the three days.
Among them, 29 crashes occurred on Saturday, killing 12 and injuring nine others.
Twenty-six accidents took place on Sunday, claiming 11 lives and wounding 26 people.
On Monday, 15 people died and 18 were injured in 25 accidents.
A particularly serious collision happened along a section of National Highway No. 1 in south-central Binh Dinh Province at around 1:25 am on Monday.
Three people on a motorbike were killed after their vehicle was hit by a passenger bus.
On Monday, traffic police officers booked nearly 4,560 violations, imposing fines totaling VND4 billion (US$174,100), revoking 617 driver’s licenses, and impounding 77 cars and 1,594 motorbikes.
Among the traffic offenses, 919 were driving under the influence of alcohol, while 656 were speeding.
Public workers in Vietnam are given four days off from April 30 to May 3 to celebrate Reunification Day and International Workers’ Day.
