Vietnam Recycles (VR) has added more locations to its campaign to collect electronic waste in several districts in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

The three new venues in Hanoi include the premises of the People’s Committee of Trang Tien Ward at 2 Co Tan Street in Hoan Kiem District, the People’s Committee of Thanh Cong Ward at 9 Thanh Cong Street in Ba Dinh District, and the Hanoi Environmental Protection Agency at 17 Trung Yen 3 Street in Cau Giay District.

The three added places in Ho Chi Minh City are MM Mega Market An Phu in An Phu Ward under Thu Duc City, the premises of the People’s Committee of Ward 17 at 22 Nguyen Van Troi Street in Phu Nhuan District, and the People’s Committee of Ward 9 at 82 Ba Huyen Thanh Quan Street in District 3.

“In the past, computer repair stores always gave used or broken parts back to me, which I used to put together with household waste to be collected by garbage trucks,” said Vu Mai Cuc, a 30-year-old resident of Tan Phu District in Ho Chi Minh City. 

“I know they contain toxic components that are dangerous to human health but there’s no other way,” Cuc confessed, adding that she had no choice but to keep bigger ones like computer monitors in her houses year after year. 

“Now I find it convenient that there’re places collecting them for recycling.”

Electronic waste, or e-waste, accounts for only two percent of total solid waste, but contains up to 70 percent of toxic substances such as lead and cadmium, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Vietnam Recycles is a free electronic waste take-back and recycling program initiated by electronic manufacturers in order to comply with the Vietnamese prime minister’s decision issued in 2015 on retrieval and disposal of discarded products.

It expresses the manufacturers’ responsibilities to the environment and community in taking back and recycling used electronic devices in a safe, professional, and environmentally-friendly manner.

People are encouraged to bring old electronic devices to VR venues to earn points and redeem them later for environmentally-friendly gifts.
