Two people were killed and another hospitalized after drinking a significant amount of alcohol purchased from multiple stores in Vietnam’s Central Highlands last week.
Two brothers from Da Nghit Village in Lac Duong District, Jrang Ha H., 26, and Lieng Jrang Ha H., 23, were admitted to the hospital on Tuesday for alcohol poisoning, according to doctors of Lam Dong Province General Hospital.
Despite three days of intensive treatment, including mechanical ventilation and continuous blood dialysis, their conditions did not improve and they passed away on Friday.
On Thursday night, a 36-year-old man who joined the party with the two brothers was also hospitalized in a critical condition.
He is now receiving intensive treatment for acute kidney failure, liver failure, and electrolyte-water imbalance.
Having received reports on the methanol poisoning case, the Lam Dong Province Sub-Department of Food Hygiene and Safety cooperated with the provincial police and the Lac Duong District Medical Center to launch an investigation and collect ten samples of alcohol from various shops for testing.
The two brothers and six others had a drinking party together on Saturday last week, but only the two brothers continued drinking until late at night, according to preliminary results.
The following day, both of them experienced headaches, blurred vision, and back pain.
Their intake of medication did not ease the symptoms.
The two men were taken to the hospital by their family on Tuesday, when they were diagnosed with critical methanol poisoning.
Bui Van Do, head of the Lam Dong Province Sub-Department of Food Hygiene and Safety, stated that the alcohol involved in the poisoning case was purchased from many retailers, which made their investigation task complicated and time-consuming.
