A big fire broke out at a restaurant in downtown Ho Chi Minh City on Monday morning.

Preliminary information showed that the inferno engulfed District K restaurant on Thu Khoa Huan Street in District 1 at around 9:30 am.

Located about 50 meters north of the iconic Ben Thanh Market, the restaurant often serves beer and alcoholic drinks.

A lot of smoke came from the fire and could be seen far in the distance.

Officers and more than 10 fire engines under the city’s fire fighting and prevention police unit were mobilized to the site.

A section of the street was fenced off to facilitate firefighters’ efforts to put out the flames.

A lot of residents and tourists gathered near the fencing to witness the incident.

An eyewitness said that the restaurant was closed when the fire broke out.

Several workers were doing repair work inside the venue but managed to get out in time.

A source close to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper stated that the restaurant, which covers about 800 square meters, was suspended from operating on October 5 over violations of fire safety regulations.

A police official confirmed at 11:30 am the same day that the fire did not cause any casualties but burned down a lot of assets inside the restaurant.
