Police in Tra Vinh Province, located in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, have investigated three suspects on suspicion of trafficking in a newborn baby.
Officers under the provincial Department of Public Security confirmed on Tuesday initiated legal proceedings against Nguyen Huu Duong, 30, Nguyen Vu Hoang Tuan, 27, and Thach Thi Kim Nhung, 20, on charges of trafficking in people under 16 years old.
Duong and Tuan were taken into custody, while Nhung was placed under house arrest.
On December 4, police caught Duong transporting a newborn baby in an automobile driven by an unidentified man.
Officers pulled over the car for an inspection and found several suspicious documents, including a pledge to give away the child, a record of finding an abandoned baby, and a birth certificate signed by Ho Chi Minh City-based Tu Du Obstetrics Hospital.
At first, Duong insisted that he had adopted the child from another person on a voluntary basis.
Upon interrogation, Duong admitted that he had bought the baby from Tuan and Nhung for VND20 million (US$843).
Tung and Nhung are a couple and have two children – a 22-month-old and a 50-day-old.
Duong and Nhung found each other on Facebook and reached a deal to buy a child.
After buying the youngest child from the couple, Duong was on his way to deliver the baby to his buyer when he was caught by police.
