A pickup truck driver was booked on Thursday for driving on the wrong side of the newly-opened Phan Thiet-Dau Giay Expressway in Vietnam.

The wrong-way driver was identified as T.Q.S., a 45-year-old native of Binh Thuan Province, south-central Vietnam, Major Hoang Xuan An, a local traffic police officer, confirmed on the same day.

The driver will be fined VND17 million (US$728) and get his driving license revoked for six months for committing this traffic offense, as per the prevailing regulations.

Earlier, a dashcam video shared on social media showed that a black pickup truck was traveling in the wrong direction on the expressway on Wednesday.

It was en route from southern Dong Nai Province to south-central Binh Thuan.

Police then verified the video clip and identified the driver and its plate number.

At a local police station, the driver attributed his wrong-way driving to “not knowing the right way.”

The 99km Phan Thiet-Dau Giay Expressway was opened to traffic last weekend.

The route starts from an intersection with the Vinh Hao-Phan Thiet Expressway running through Ham Thuan Nam District in Binh Thuan Province and ends at an intersection with the Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway passing through Thong Nhat District in Dong Nai Province.
