Police in Da Nang said on Tuesday that they had caught a group of drug traffickers red-handed transporting nine kilograms of ketamine from Quang Tri Province in north-central Vietnam to the central coastal city.
This was the largest drug trafficking ring in Da Nang, police officers said.
Police started secretly investigating a ring of smuggling narcotics with a huge volume in late March 2023.
The ringleader was identified as Tra Van Cong, a 33-year-old resident of Ngu Hanh Son District.
The traffickers contacted others in Quang Tri to buy illicit drugs for consumption in the city.
On Monday, investigators predicted that Cong would travel to the Lao Bao border gate in Quang Tri to receive the narcotics.
As such, police stopped a car driven by H.T.P., with Cong and another man named Dang Quang Hieu on board, for a check at the Mui Trau Tunnel area in Hoa Vang District on Tuesday afternoon.
After a search, police officers found nine plastic bags on the back seat of the car. These bags contained nine kilograms of ketamine.
Cong and Hieu tested positive for illegal drugs.
Cong confessed that he had bought the drugs from an unknown man in Lao Bao Town in Quang Tri and intended to sell them in Da Nang.
