A downpour on Monday morning in Lao Cai City in the northern Vietnamese province of the same name submerged many roads in waist-deep water, prompting local residents to use floaties to travel on the road.

The two-hour-long rain left Lao Cai City’s drainage system overwhelmed, resulting in traffic gridlock on many streets and flooding local houses, according to the local administration.

The impact of the rain was mostly felt in Kim Tan, Bac Cuong, Nam Cuong, and Bac Lenh Wards.

The section of Tran Hung Dao Street passing through Nam Cuong and Bac Lenh Wards experienced traffic congestion as the lane for motorbikes was heavily inundated.

Rainwater flooded close to 100 houses citywide and affected household facilities, according to data from the Lao Cai administration.

The provincial steering committee for natural disaster prevention and control said that localities were working out the total damages triggered by the downpour and were coping with the aftermath of the excessive rain.

Last weekend, this mountainous border province experienced moderate to heavy rains, during which one resident died in a slip-and-fall accident near a stream, five houses in Lao Cai City and Bao Thang District were flooded, two houses were hit by landslides, and 100ha of farmland was submerged in water.
