Cows which are left unbridled in many urban areas and industrial parks in Da Nang City, central Vietnam have become an obsession with locals as they have caused traffic accidents and pollution.

The coastal city has established teams to deal with stray cattle but failed to absolutely resolve the problem.

It is not hard to bump into herds of cows wandering or grazing on streets in the Phuoc Ly, Hoa Quy-Dong No, and Golden Hills Urban Areas.

T.V.H., residing in the Phuoc Ly Urban Area, said residents in the neighborhood are fed up with the scene of dozens of cows roaming freely and pooping in the street.

“We have repeatedly complained but no drastic measures have been worked out to put an end to the issue,” H. said.

The Da Nang Hi-Tech Park and Industrial Zones Authority has also asked the People’s Committees of Lien Chieu and Hoa Vang Districts to sanction the owner of stray cows on road 10B in the Hoa Khanh Industrial Park of Lien Chieu and extended Nguyen Tat Thanh Street passing through Hoa Vang’s Hoa Lien Commune as well as Lien Chieu’s Hoa Hiep Nam Ward.

Earlier, the developer of the Golden Hills Urban Area had written to local authorities asking for help over stray cattle.

In 2022, the Da Nang People’s Council issued a resolution on banning cattle breeding in inner-city and urban areas.

Individuals and organizations are not allowed to raise cattle and other animals, except pets and animals in labs, in Hai Chau, Thanh Khe, Son Tra, Ngu Hanh Son, Cam Le, and Lien Chieu Districts, as well as existing residential areas and resettlement areas in Hoa Vang District.

Nguyen Minh Hoang, vice-chairman of Hoa Hiep Bac Ward in Lien Chieu District, said the ward had screened videos about traffic accidents caused by stray cattle so that residents could see the danger of their acts.

In the ward, 48 households currently raise 66 buffaloes and 699 cows.

Ward officials have come to each of these households to ask them to promise not to leave their cattle unbridled.

The ward will seize stray cattle and fine their owners starting this month, Hoang added.

Hoa Hiep Nam and Hoa Minh Wards in Lien Chieu District, and Hoa Quy Ward in Ngu Hanh Son District have formed forces to cope with stray cattle.
