More than 22 million students across Vietnam celebrated the official start of their 2023-24 academic year on Tuesday morning.

In Vietnam, the new school year normally starts on the morning of September 5 every year.

As instructed by the Ministry of Education and Training, school opening ceremonies took place in a brief and solemn manner nationwide.

All schools welcomed students, held flag-salute rites, sang the national anthem, and read a congratulatory letter by Vietnam's state president to teachers and students.

Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son called on teachers to enhance their dynamism and creativity in educational activities in the 2023-24 school year.

Schools should continue overcoming difficulties and improving infrastructure and teaching equipment to effectively apply curricula.

In Hanoi alone, over 2.2 million students in all grades attended 60-minute school opening ceremonies as directed by the municipal Department of Education and Training.

Schools in the capital spread topics and messages for the new school year to teachers, parents, and students, such as 'gratitude,' 'happiness,' and 'cooperation.'

In some schools, senior students gave flowers to welcome junior mates.

Some schools also honored excellent students and supported those in dire circumstances.

Meanwhile, most schools in Phu Quoc City, Kien Giang Province, southern Vietnam canceled new academic year opening ceremonies due to a rain triggered by Typhoon Saola, the third to affect Vietnam this year.

Nevertheless, An Thoi High School in the city organized a short ceremony for 30 minutes to begin the new academic year.

Some schools held the ceremonies in their halls instead of the schoolyards as usual.
