A middle school student in Dak Lak Province, located in Vietnam’s Central Highlands region, died after running 250 meters in a physical education (PE) class on Wednesday morning, a local official confirmed on the same day.
The female victim, named D.V.G.H., was studying at Tan Loi Middle School in the provincial city of Buon Ma Thuot City, according to Pham Tien Hung, vice-chairman of the city’s administration.
She and her classmates were attending a short- and long-run session in the PE class on Wednesday morning.
After running about 250 meters at around 7:30 am, she staggered and fell onto the floor while walking toward the finish line.
Her PE teacher immediately gave her first aid before asking for help from the school’s healthcare specialist, who called an ambulance and the schoolgirl’s mother.
H. was rushed to a local general hospital where she received emergency treatment for nearly two hours but she was unable to overcome it and was pronounced dead at around 10:00 am the same day.
She died due to underlying heart disease, Nguyen Thi Hong Thao, vice-principal at the school, said, citing a doctor’s diagnosis.
Before the incident happened, the schoolgirl went to school in good health and reported no underlying health issues, the vice-principal added.
Representatives from the Buon Ma Thuot education authority and the school visited the bereaved family to offer their condolences.
The family members declined an autopsy on the victim, the city’s vice-chairman said.
