A heavy downpour in the early hours of Wednesday caused severe flooding along several roads and low-lying areas in Son La City under the namesake province in northern Vietnam, said a local official the same day.

Speaking to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper, Do Van Tru, chairman of the city’s administration, said that search and rescue forces had been dispatched to heavily-flooded areas and key locations to safeguard residents against weather-related dangers.

No human damage was reported but a number of local households were waterlogged and hit by mudflows, he added.

The official elaborated that the National Highway 6 section passing through the city was hit hardest by flooding.

Thuong, a resident in Quyet Tam Ward, said that flooding battered a 100-meter-long section of Tran Dang Ninh Street, with several parts under waist-high water, making the route totally impassable.

Floodwaters flowed into many homes along the street, and relevant forces were working to prevent vehicles from entering the waterlogged route, Thuong continued.

The National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting said that thunderstorms and rainfall of 30-100mm are expected in northern Vietnam and the north-central province of Thanh Hoa on Wednesday due to the impact of storm Prapiroon.

Rain will likely abate from Thursday, the national weather center said.
