Traffic police in the Mekong Delta provinces of Tien Giang and Ben Tre, where the Rach Mieu Bridge is located, will use drones to detect and address vehicles driving against traffic on the bridge, as well as respond to any incidents, during the National Day (September 2) holiday.
On Thursday, traffic officers in Tieng Giang and Ben Tre, along with Rach Mieu Bridge BOT One Member Limited Company, the developer of the bridge, to address traffic congestion issues in the area near the bridge, National Highway 60, and the Rach Mieu temporary ferry terminal during the upcoming holiday, which will start on Saturday and last through Tuesday.
Rach Mieu Bridge BOT One Member Limited Company projected that approximately 26,000 vehicles will use the bridge daily during the four-day holiday, a 30-percent increase compared to normal days.
To manage this surge, authorities will implement several measures, including forming a Zalo group with functional agencies and local police to facilitate rapid information exchange and traffic coordination across the two provinces.
Drones will also be used to promptly detect and address vehicles driving against traffic and any incidents on the bridge.
Additionally, a 100-metric-ton ferry will be added to the Rach Mieu temporary ferry terminal, increasing the total number of operational ferries to four.
During peak hours at the Rach Mieu Bridge toll station, the lanes for oversized and overloaded vehicles will be used to prioritize motorbikes and prevent congestion, supplementing the two existing motorbike lanes.
The Rach Mieu Bridge, which connects Tien Giang and Ben Tre and serves as a key route to other Mekong Delta localities, was designed for approximately 6,000 vehicles.
However, after 15 years, the bridge now handles three times that number, contributing to traffic jams and congestion.
