The administration of Ho Chi Minh City will spend VND245 billion (US$9.9 million) from the city’s budget upgrading Tran Xuan Soan Street in District 7 in an attempt to tackle flooding along this high-traffic route.
The anti-flooding project was approved at a meeting held by the city’s People’s Council on Friday morning.
The project will be carried out from 2024 to 2025, with the District 7 project management board serving as the developer.
Tran Xuan Soan Street spans some 3.3 kilometers from an intersection with Huynh Tan Phat Street to the Rach Ong Bridge.
It is a high-traffic route linking District 7 with District 8 and District 4, according to the municipal administration.
This street is prone to frequent flooding during rains and high tides, which poses risks to traffic safety.
Local residents and the media have repeatedly voiced their concerns over the issue, highlighting a pressing need for upgrading the road and building a new drainage system.
The project aims to improve drainage and mitigate flooding, enhance environmental sanitation, beautify the urban landscape, and strengthen the infrastructure of the area.
The city will repair and upgrade the existing road surface while maintaining its current width, without the need for site clearance or compensation.
At the meeting, the city’s People’s Council approved an embankment project to prevent erosion along the riverbank adjacent to Tran Xuan Soan Street, with a total investment of approximately VND130 billion ($5.2 million).
Another project to renovate Dang Thuy Tram Street in Binh Thanh District from 2024 to 2027 was also given the green light at the event.
With a price tag of around VND93 billion ($3.7 million), the road renovation project is aimed at improving connectivity between Dang Thuy Tram Street and other major roads such as Nguyen Xi, Pham Van Dong, Luong Ngoc Quyen, and No Trang Long Streets.
