Y Quynh Bdap, who directed the terrorist case that left nine deaths, including police officers, in Dak Lak Province in Vietnam’s Central Highlands last year will be extradited from Thailand, the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Thursday.

Foreign ministry spokeswoman Pham Thu Hang made the confirmation at a press meeting in Hanoi in response to reporters’ queries about Vietnam’s point of views related to a recent judgment by the Bangkok Criminal Court to extradite Bdap to Vietnam.

Hang assessed the court’s ruling as an appropriate decision that ensures all criminal offenders must be punished in accordance with law.

“Vietnamese authorities will coordinate with their Thai counterpart to handle this case in line with the laws of the two nations,” she affirmed.

Bdap, a 32-year-old man native of Dak Lak, was arrested in Bangkok in June this year for overstay.

The man, who is currently held at the Bangkok Remand Prison, has 30 days for appeal to the judgment, which was issued on September 30, while the Thai government has 90 days to carry out the extradition, Bangkok Post reported.

The man has been put in the special wanted list after the deadly terror case and was sentenced in absentia to 10 years in jail on charges of terrorism by the provincial People’s Court in January 2024.

Among the 100 defendants involved in the case, 10 got life imprisonment for ‘terrorism against the people's government’ while the others received sentences from nine months to 20 years in jail for various offenses.

According to the case file, two groups of about 100 people armed with guns and homemade weapons launched attacks on the headquarters of the People’s Committees in Ea Tieu and Ea Ktur Communes in the province’s Cu Kuin District on June 11, 2023.

The attackers killed four police officers, two commune officials, and three civilians.

They also injured two individuals and held three residents hostage who were rescued later.

The attacks caused a total damage of VND2.5 billion (US$99,000) to assets of both state and people.

In 2018, Bdap, who has a history of criminal offenses in Vietnam, illegally left Vietnam for Thailand, where he established the MSFJ and later carried out activities to prepare for launching the aforementioned terror attacks under his directions.
