The family of a man who was declared brain-dead following a severe traffic accident has decided to donate his organs, giving five patients a chance at life.
The family of the man, identified as C.G.C., a 34-year-old resident of Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City, faced an unimaginable loss but chose to donate his organs after learning that he could not survive.
“The accident that befell my son was completely unexpected. Though it is devastating, we decided to register for organ donation because I know that the biggest challenge in organ transplantation in Vietnam is the severe shortage of organs,” said his father, C.P.L..
“We hope that my son’s organs can save the lives of other critically ill patients.”
Nhan Dan Gia Dinh Hospital in the southern metropolis confirmed the organ donation on Tuesday afternoon.
Following the serious accident, C. was evaluated three times at the hospital on Saturday night last week, and was diagnosed with brain death.
Dr. Nguyen Hoang Hai, director of the hospital, convened a meeting with the hospital’s organ transplant specialists to discuss and consider the patient’s condition and the wishes of the family to donate his organs.
It was decided that his heart, liver, and kidneys would be suitable for transplantation.
The organs were quickly allocated to patients in need of transplants.
The heart was sent to Hue Central Hospital in central Vietnam.
The left part of the liver was transported to the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital at Ho Chi Minh City, while the right part was transferred to 108 Military Central Hospital in Hanoi.
Besides, the kidneys were transplanted into two patients at Nhan Dan Gia Dinh Hospital.
The medical teams at the hospital worked tirelessly to protect the organs, ensuring they remained in optimal condition for transplant.
Hundreds of doctors and medical workers across Vietnam worked around the clock to transport the donated organs, successfully carrying out transplants for patients in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Thua Thien-Hue Province.
Tragic accident, life-saving decision
A tragic accident left C. with multiple severe injuries on his head, neck, and chest.
When he was rushed to the hospital at 7:00 pm on Saturday, he had already suffered cardiac arrest and was not breathing.
A CT scan of his brain revealed severe traumatic brain injury, with signs of brain hemorrhaging, subdural hematoma, diffuse brain swelling, and fractures of the frontal and temporal bones.
Despite intensive efforts to resuscitate him, C.'s condition showed no signs of improvement.
