Construction workers discovered an unexploded wartime bomb while leveling the ground at a freshwater plant project in Muong Lat District, Thanh Hoa Province, north-central Vietnam on Friday afternoon.

The 1.3m-long bomb, with a diameter of over 0.4m, was found buried beneath the former site of Tam Chung Commune's health station.

Upon receiving the report, district officials and military personnel swiftly cordoned off the area to ensure public safety. 

The incident was reported to the provincial Military Command for further action.

Hoang Van Dung, vice-chairman of the Muong Lat District administration, confirmed that military sappers are scheduled to neutralize the bomb on Saturday.

Earlier, wartime bomb discoveries were also reported in various parts across Vietnam.

In mid-January, military forces in Binh Phuoc Province, southern Vietnam confirmed that they had safely retrieved and disposed of a 227kg Mk82 bomb, discovered by a local farmer while he was excavating an irrigation pond for durian trees in Bu Dang District.

According to the district military command, Bu Dang was a fierce battleground during the war between 1965 and 1975, leaving a significant number of unexploded bombs and landmines in the area.

On October 20 last year, military sappers in Hanoi safely defused a 1,362kg American-made bomb, whose detonators and explosives were still intact.

A few days later, authorities in the central province of Quang Tri safely detonated a 240kg magnetic bomb believed to be unexploded ordnance from wartime.
