Hanoi Industrial Textile JSC, whose smoke stack has been causing pollution and discomfort to nearby residents in Hanoi, will have to relocate its operations from the Vietnamese capital city's urban area, according to the municipal Department of Agriculture and Environment.
This move came after an investigation revealed that emissions from its factory were directly affecting local residents.
Nguyen Xuan Dai, director of the department, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Monday that the factory must cease operations and move its production facilities outside the city center.
“We have instructed Hanoi Industrial Textile JSC to halt its operations and relocate all of its polluting production units from the residential area by August,” he said.
The decision followed a thorough investigation into the company’s environmental impact.
The municipal department, the People's Committee of Hoang Mai District, and other relevant agencies on Saturday last week conducted an inspection of the firm.
Many residents of high-rise buildings in Hanoi had previously complained about the smoke emissions from the textile factory.
They expressed frustration over the smoke column, which was constantly directed toward their apartments, causing severe air quality issues.
The textile factory, located at 91-93 Linh Nam Street in Mai Dong Ward, Hoang Mai District, is situated in a densely populated area, only about seven kilometers from the city’s iconic Hoan Kiem Lake.
Hanoi chairman Tran Sy Thanh last Thursday tasked the municipal Department of Agriculture and Environment and Hoang Mai District authorities with investigating and addressing concerns over the factory’s environmental impact and disruption to residents' daily lives.
He demanded a report on the issue by March 20.
