Hanoi has revealed a plan to develop a light tower at the center of Dong Kinh-Nghia Thuc Square, replacing the current water fountain.

The Party Committee of the Hanoi administration has issued a report about the implementation of a plan to renovate the square and public spaces in Hoan Kiem District to the municipal Party Committee’s Standing Board.

The light tower is expected to contribute to the landscape and provide modern lighting for the square area and Hoan Kiem Lake.

According to the report, the light tower will be designed to meet both technical and aesthetic needs, enhancing the heritage values of Hoan Kiem Lake.

The city also weighs expanding the square. The public space expansion and renovation plan will focus on an area of 12,000 square meters, with the square itself bordered by several iconic locations.

To the north, it is designed to connect with Hang Gai and Cau Go Streets, while the southern boundary will touch Hoan Kiem Lake and Thuy Ta Building.

The eastern edge is defined by Ho Hoan Kiem Street, and the western side can border the Hong Van-Long Van Building.

The plan includes the demolition of the Shark Jaw building and the development of underground space including three basement levels, with cultural and commercial spaces on the first basement level and parking facilities on the second and third levels.

The water fountain at the center of Dong Kinh-Nghia Thuc Square was built in 1954.
