The Department of Construction of Da Nang, the capital city of central Vietnam, has proposed building a 1.67km-long tunnel under the Han River, with an estimated total investment of VND6.88 trillion (US$270 million).
The underwater tunnel would connect Dong Da Street in Hai Chau District with Van Don Street in Son Tra District, helping to alleviate traffic congestion and support the city’s projected transportation needs through 2045.
The plan aligns with the Vietnamese prime minister’s master planning decisions for Da Nang, including adjustments through 2030 and a vision extending to 2050.
The proposed tunnel would feature a 600-meter submerged section under the Han River, a 380-meter underground stretch along the riverbank, and an open tunnel.
The project’s estimated budget includes VND3.9 trillion ($152 million) for construction and VND2 trillion ($78.2 million) for land clearance and resettlement, with the remaining funds allocated for additional costs.

In addition to the Han River tunnel, Da Nang is considering an underground tunnel spanning 2.9 kilometers beneath Da Nang International Airport.
The tunnel would connect Truong Chinh Street with Duy Tan Street and the western ring road No. 2.
Two potential designs have been proposed for the airport tunnel. The first, with a total capital of VND10 trillion ($391 million), would accommodate both a rapid transit system (MRT) and road traffic.
The second, costing VND7.5 trillion ($293 million), would separate the MRT from road traffic.
During a recent meeting of the Da Nang People’s Council, officials emphasized the need for thorough planning before moving forward with both tunnel projects.
They called for detailed assessments of construction methods, funding sources, and execution timelines to ensure feasibility and efficiency.
