The Asian Football Confederation has selected Vietnam to host the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in May next year, according to the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF).

Tran Quoc Tuan, VFF general secretary, said he was informed of the news by an official of the AFC Competitions Committee on attending the 63rd annual conference of FIFA in the African nation Mauritius.

After the meeting, an AFC delegation will visit Vietnam to inspect competition infrastructures before officially signing an agreement with the VFF.

The hosting of the event is good news for the Vietnamese national women’s football team, who booked last week a spot to play the finals comprising eight opponents: four automatic teams from Australia, Japan, China, and South Korea and group leaders from Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, and an unidentified leader of group A to start competition in June.

Group A has Uzbekistan, Jordan, Kuwait, and Lebanon.

The eight teams will be divided in two groups and two leaders in each group will advance to the women’s World Cup in Canada in 2015. Two third-ranked teams will play a play-off to decide the owner of the last ticket to Canada.

To prepare for the next year’s tournament, VFF has decided to send the national women’s team to Japan for a long-term training trip.
