After failing to advance to the last-four round thanks to a 0-3 loss to Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, Vietnam won twice in playoff matches to finish fifth at the 2015 Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship in Tianjin, China.

Vietnam joined three other quarterfinal losers including Iran, Japan and Kazakhstan to take part in playoffs to decide their rankings from fifth to eighth places.

On May 27, Vietnam beat Iran 3-1 and Japan defeated Kazakhstan 3-0.

Vietnam and Japan, the two winners of the playoffs, then played on May 28 for fifth place, and the Vietnamese subdued the Japanese 3-1, while Kazakhstan crushed Iran 3-0 to claim seventh place.

To enter the quarterfinals, Vietnam crushed Mongolia 3-0 and came from behind to defeat Japan 3-2 in the preliminary qualification round last week, before beating Iran 3-2 and losing 0-3 to China in the second qualification round.

In the semifinals on May 27, China beat Thailand 3-1 to play in the final match with South Korea, who also defeated Chinese Taipei with the same result.

Thailand later thrashed Chinese Taipei 3-0 to stand in third place and win a bronze medal.

China and South Korea are now playing the final match in Tianjin.
