Vietnam win ticket to continental under-19 women’s football tourney

Vietnam have booked a place in the finals of the AFC U-19 Women's Championship hosted by China next year after defeating Iran on Sunday on home soil. The Vietnamese earned six points following this victory in the group stage and will participate in the championship in August 2017 as the Group D leaders.

Vietnam and Iran used their strongest line-up because of the importance of the game in Hanoi, as they had earned three and one point respectively.

In the three-team Group D, the Vietnamese routed India 4-0 on November 4 while the Iranians drew 1-1 against the Indians two days earlier.

The two sides staged an offensive performance because the winners would advance to the finals of the continental tourney.

They mounted continuous attacks toward each other’s woodwork but could not score any goal in the first half.

Minutes into the second half, striker Nguyen Thi Nu opened the scoring for the hosts after a lovely one-two with Tran Thi Nhung.

The Vietnamese then repeatedly created dangerous opportunities before forward Tuyet Ngan netted the concluding second goal in the 93rd minute.

The Vietnamese gained six points and made it to the finals with Australia (Group A winners), Uzbekistan (Group B winners), reigning champions Japan, 2015 runners-up North Korea, third-placed winners South Korea, and hosts China.

Group C winners have yet to be determined.

The 2017 AFC U-19 Women's Championship will be the 9th edition of the AFC U-19 Women's Championship, a biennial tournament organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) for under-19 national teams.
