Vietnam’s under-23 football team will take a friendly four-team tournament, with the underage Barcelona squad among the contenders, as a quality test before their journey at the 2018 Asian Games.

The international tourney, which also includes Oman and Uzbekistan, is slated to take place in Hanoi this August, people familiar with the matter revealed on Friday.

A Vietnamese football official asserted that all the three guest teams had accepted the invitation to join in the tournament, scheduled for August 3, 5, and 7 at the capital’s My Dinh National Stadium.

The process to have the Barcelona U23s play in Vietnam has gone quite smooth, as the La Liga side are partnering with the Ho Chi Minh City FC to open a football academy in the southern Vietnamese city, according to the source.

The three strong rivals will allow Vietnam’s coach Park Han Seo to have a good test with his team before the 2018 Asian Games takes place in Indonesia from August 18 to September 2.

Park has completed a preliminary list of 58 players, including those who won the second-place at the 2018 AFC U23 championship, to prepare for the event.

Vietnam U23s are carrying high hopes from local supporters to continue to shine at the upcoming Asian Games, following the miracle journey at the Asian championship in China in January.

At the 2014 Asian Games, the Vietnamese U-23 players also exhibited impressive performance, beating Iran 4-1 and Kyrgyzstan 1-0 to make it to the knockout stage, where they were eliminated by the UAE.
