There is a ‘vendetta’ hard to settle between Vietnam and Thailand in women’s football in Southeast Asia and they will take on each other in the finale of the category at the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Philippines on Sunday.

The final showdown at 7:00 pm at Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila will be a clash between the arch-enemies to prove the winners are the absolute queens of the Beautiful Game in the region.

At the 2019 SEA Games, the Philippines, Malaysia and Myanmar were placed in Group A while Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia made up Group B.

Vietnam progressed to the semifinal round as group toppers, having drawn 1-1 against Thailand and routed Indonesia 6-0.

The Vietnamese women beat hosts the Philippines 2-0 in the semifinal, whereas Thailand marginally defeated Myanmar 1-0 in their last-four encounter, both on Thurday.

Both teams have struck gold in SEA Games women’s football for five times, with Vietnam claiming the title in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2009, and 2017 while the Thai women won it in 1985, 1995, 1997, 2007, and 2013.

Vietnam have taken on Thailand for 16 times since 2009, winning six, losing five, and drawing five.

Among them were very important games like the play-off in 2014 for the finals of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, where Vietnam were eliminated after a bitter 1-2 defeat against their Thai opponents.

Then the Vietnamese women brilliantly beat Thailand 3-2 at the Asian Games in 2018, just four months since Thailand secured a ticket to the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup finals.

Sunday’s rematch will be aired live on national channel VTV6.
