Vietnam welcomed more than 8.8 million international visitors in the first half of 2024, soaring 58.4 percent year on year and marking a 4.1-percent increase compared to the same period in 2019, before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The number of tourist arrivals from India skyrocketed 312 percent in comparison to the same period in 2019, while the growth of travelers to Vietnam from Cambodia stood at 396 percent.
Of the total, air travelers accounted for over 7.4 million, while overland visitors made up more than 1.26 million. The number of holidaymakers by sea remained modest.
In June alone, over 1.2 million international tourists traveled to Vietnam, a year-on-year rise of 28.1 percent, according to the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism.
Given the positive growth in international travelers in the first half of the year, Vietnam reached 50 percent of the whole-year target, set at 17-18 million international tourist arrivals.
During the January-June period, South Korea continued to be Vietnam’s largest tourist source market, with 2.2 million travelers, or 25.8 percent of the total international tourist arrivals.
China came second, sending 1.8 million tourists to the Southeast Asian nation in the first half.
Other major tourist source markets were the United States, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, India, Cambodia, and Thailand.
Many tour operators said that the peak season for inbound tourism in Vietnam lasts from October to April the following year.
Therefore, the number of international tourist arrivals in Vietnam is forecast to continue rising in the coming months.
Moreover, the country is implementing a series of tourism promotion programs and stepping up efforts to popularize tourism services and products among international friends.
Between January and June, Vietnam served 66.5 million domestic vacationers.
