Tran Quoc Dat, 23, developed a passion for goldfish during his childhood, but it was not until he was in his late teens that he began earning a living by breeding goldfish in Ho Chi Minh City. 

Dat’s 1,300-square-meter goldfish farm in Cu Chi District is home to somwhere between 6,000 and 10,000 Ranchu and Oranda goldfish individuals.

According to Dat, Cu Chi District has a good source of well water which is fantastic for the health of his fish once he stabalizes its pH and oxygen levels.

Dat also cleans his fish tanks every three to four days to ensure his fish thrive.

“At first, I found it difficult to treat the water and my fish often got sick. It took a while before I mastered goldfish farming,” Dat said.

Dat’s goldfish sell for VND10,000 (US$0.42) to VND10 million (423) each.

For their four daily meals, they eat aquafeed, worms, and eggs steamed with pumpkin.

“I want to better the quality of goldfish raised in Vietnam and improve our exports,” Dat said.

Currently, Dat focuses on selling his fish in the domestic market, primarily to large farms that purchase his stock to raise and resell.

He currently earns VND80-100 million ($3,382-4,228) each month from his farm.
