Passenger burns tissue on plane before take-off at Hanoi airport

The captain decided to steer the aircraft back to the apron and hand over the passenger to airport security

A plane had to return to the airport apron after a passenger burned tissues inside the cabin just a moment before its take-off in Hanoi on Monday morning.

The incident took place on board flight VN243 operated by national carrier Vietnam Airlines, which was scheduled to leave Hanoi for Ho Chi Minh City at 8:00 am.

Having taxied from the apron to the runway, the aircraft was preparing for its departure when a passenger at seat No. 20A set a piece of tissue on fire with a lighter.

The passenger quickly put out the flame and did not let the incident result in any damage to the plane.

A flight attendant who had witnessed the incident reported it to the captain, who later decided to steer the aircraft back to the apron and hand over the passenger to airport security.

The flight then took off at 9:15 am the same day.

Vietnam Airlines informed all passengers of the incident and asked for their understanding.

According to Tran Hoai Phuong, director of the Northern Airports Authority, such an action is considered a disruption or threat to flight security and safety.

The agency will verify the case and determine a suitable penalty in accordance with regulations, Phuong added.
