Vietnam, China to strive for healthy, stable cooperation

Vietnamese State President Tran Dai Quang and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping have discussed measures to strengthen the healthy and stable relationship between the two nations.

The talk was convened in Beijing on Thursday evening, within the framework of President Quang’s state visit to China from May 11 to 15.

During their conversation, President Xi affirmed that his home country places high importance on its friendship with Vietnam, hoping to tighten the two nations’ relationship and strive for a stable comprehensive strategic partnership.

Replying to his host, the Vietnamese head of state said that the healthy and stable development of Vietnam-China collaboration is suitable for the basic and long-term interests of the two peoples, thus benefiting peace, stability, and development in the region and world.

The Vietnamese Party and State always treasure the enhancement of the neighborly friendship and comprehensive cooperation with their Chinese counterparts, President Quang continued, adding that boosting this friendship is a top priority of Vietnam’s external relations. 

The two leaders agreed on improving the quality and effectiveness of their economic cooperation, while directing ministries, sectors, localities and businesses to carry out agreed plans, programs, and projects.

They also consented on boosting bilateral trade, facilitating Vietnam’s trade promotion offices in Chinese localities, and encouraging businesses to increase their cooperation, especially in agricultural and fishery products.

Chinese enterprises are encouraged to join eco-friendly advanced technology projects that are suitable to Vietnam’s demand and strategy for sustainable development.

President Quang asked China to apply certain measures to reduce Vietnam’s trade deficit with the country, including stepping up the import of Vietnamese farm produce.

The two nations should cement cooperation in agriculture, the environment, science-technology, climate change response, sustainable use of water resources in the Mekong River, and environmental protection.

Regarding the situation in the East Vietnam Sea, President Quang reiterated Vietnam’s consistent stance on solving disputes with peaceful measures, as per international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and with respect to diplomatic and legal processes.

The two sides should implement common perceptions and reached agreements, amicably manage their differences, and refrain from any action that might complicate the current situation, Quang stated.

Both countries should expedite negotiating mechanisms on sea issues, cooperation in less sensitive issues at sea, he said, adding that they should comply with the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Vietnam Sea (DOC), and strive to accomplish a Code of Conduct (COC) for the maritime are within this year.

Following the talks, the two presidents witnessed the signing of several cooperative documents.
