Four of the people were captured at a hotel in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday while the other was seized in the Mekong Delta province of Vinh Long on Thursday, following the revelation by the woman.
The five include Truong Huu Luan, 23, Thai Long Ho, 26, Nguyen Thi Kim Chi, 20, Nguyen Phu Hai, 43, and Nguyen Thanh Thang, whose age is unknown.
The girl, Nguyen Han Duy, was released safe and sound by police when they raided the hotel in HCMC.
According to police documents, at about 11:00 am on Tuesday, Nguyen Van Khanh was taking Duy, his niece, to school on a motorbike in Can Tho when a car suddenly came to block his way.
A group of people got out and began beating Khanh before they took a mobile phone from him, snatched the key of his motorbike, and forced Duy to get into their car.
Khanh’s family later received many phone calls from unknown people who demanded a ransom of VND1 billion for Duy’s release or they would kill the girl.
Khanh reported the blackmail to Can Tho police who launched an investigation, trailed the gang after the group took the girl from the Mekong Delta city to HCMC, and seized four members when they were staying at a hotel in Binh Tan District.
After being arrested, Chi told police that she knew Duy’s father is a wealthy foreigner, as she is a neighbor of the girl’s family, so the woman discussed with her accomplices a plot to abduct her for a ransom. The 20-year-old female then revealed that her ring had one more member, whose name is Nguyen Thanh Thang, who had fled to Vinh Long before police swooped on their hotel.
A police chief then came to the province and nabbed Thang today.
Except for Thang, the other gang members said they are working for a restaurant in Binh Tan District, according to Can Tho police.
Police are continuing to investigate the case.
