Politics:

- On April 24, Lao Prime Minister Thongsinh Thammavong had a meeting in Laos with former Vietnamese teachers who provided education for many generations of Lao students in the past. The Lao PM said the Lao Party, State and people are extremely grateful to Vietnam for its comprehensive support for the country over the past time.

Society:

- An Indochinese tiger at Saigon Zoo has just given birth to 4 babies. During the last three months, tigers at the zoo gave birth to nine cubs, taking the number of tigers here to fifteen.

- On April 24, the World Bank signed an agreement to lend Vietnam US$390 million to carry out three poverty reduction projects which include improving agriculture, reducing poverty in the Central Highlands, and enhancing the social support system.

- The National Assembly Standing Committee discussed the citizen identification and civil laws in Hanoi on Thursday. During the discussion, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Public Security put forward a target that by 2020 all Vietnamese citizens will have had citizenship codes and cards, instead of identity cards as at present, ending the era of citizen management based on resident books.

- Five kidnappers, who abducted 14-year-old Nguyen Han Duy, a Taiwanese, in the southern city of Can Tho on April 22 and asked her family for a VND1 billion ($47,170) ransom, were arrested on Wednesday and Thursday.

Business:

- The Vietnam Maritime Administration has recently reported to the Ministry of Transport its research to build an international passenger port on Phu Quoc Island off southern Vietnam’s Kien Giang Province. Accordingly, the multi-functional port will be constructed in An Thoi Bay with a total area of around 13,743 square meters at an estimated cost of nearly VND354 billion ($16.7 million).

Education:

- On April 24, nearly 1,300 people flocked to the Binh Dinh Cultural Center in central Vietnam to meet renowned Swiss astrophysicist Micheal Mayor. The professor from the University of Geneva's Department of Astronomy in Switzerland will have an online chat about extraterrestrial life, or life outside the Earth, at 17:00 on April 25 (1000 GMT the same day). Lifestyle:

- Seventy-five Vietnamese ceramic objects made during the last 4,000 years are on display at the National History Museum in Hanoi at the exhibition “ Tuong gom co Viet nam” (ancient Vietnamese ceramic statues). The event will run at 1 Trang Tien Street, Hoan Kiem District until August.

- W.A. Mozart’s renowned opera “Cosi fan tutte” will be brought to Hanoi audiences at 8:00 pm on April 25 and 26 at the Hanoi Opera House. The opera will be performed by artists from the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet in Italian with Vietnamese and English subtitles. It was first staged in Vietnam in October 2012.
