A 31-year-old man has been confirmed as the biological father of a little girl who was cruelly beaten by a couple in the southern Vietnamese province of Binh Duong last month.

The confirmation was announced by Colonel Tran Van Chinh, chief police of Binh Duong’s Di An Town, on Tuesday, after the result of a DNA test showed that the said man, Tran Van To, from southern Soc Trang province, is the father of 4-year-old Do Thi Kim Ngan. The little girl has recently recovered from brain injuries and other serious wounds after she was brutalized by her mother 26-year-old Nguyen Thi Thuy Trang , and Trang’s de facto husband, Do Trong Minh , 27, on September 10 in their rented house in Binh Duong. That evening, when Trang saw Ngan playing on the gas stove, she used a bamboo stick to beat the girl violently, and ordered her to kneel down on the floor. Minh later hit the girl in the face, head, and buttocks with his hands. He swore at her and then tied her hands, all while Ngan remained kneeling on the floor.

Two days later, neighbors discovered the brutal assault and took the girl to the Binh Duong Province General Hospital and reported the case to police, who detained the couple the same day. After learning of the violent beating via media, To arrived at the hospital on September 15 to show a household registration book which included the name of the girl, and told hospital management that he is Ngan’s father. To confirmed that Ngan is his daughter with Trang, although they haven’t lived with him for several years. He and Trang married and obtained a certificate of marriage ten years ago, To said. To said that the couple gave birth to Ngan in 2011, and a year later, Trang took her to her parents’ house in Dong Nai Province to stay. To had visited Trang and their daughter several times to ask them to return to Soc Trang and live with him again, but Trang refused. To also said he had not known about the relationship between Trang and Minh, whom Ngan called “Dad Minh.”

Ngan’s grandmother also told police that Minh is her son-in-law and the girl’s biological father. Police finally decided to have a DNA test made in order to reach an official conclusion. Trang and Trong have been charged with “intentionally inflicting injury on, or causing harm to, the health of other persons,” pursuant to Article 104 of the Penal Code, police said.
